Ford to Update Cars with App Integration

Ford announced that it would provide a software update to extend its Sync AppLink system to 3.4 million cars already on the road.

Owners of the 2010 model year cars will soon be able to download Sync AppLink and load the app integration system into their cars.  Owners also have the option of having a dealer do the software upgrade.

Sync AppLink supports integration with over 60 apps running on iOS or Android services.  These apps include Pandora, Glympse, NPR, Aha Radio, and MOG.  When a smartphone is connected to the car, the driver can control these supported apps through voice commands and some manual controls.

Sync AppLink first became available on the 2011 Ford Fiesta.  As of the 2014 model year, it is available on most Ford cars.

Ford has not yet released specifics about which older cars can support the upgrade, though they must have the Ford Synch system.

The Sync AppLink upgrade will be available for download later this year.
